LIVE AND KICKING - The last Soft Cell date!

Synth-pop pioneers Soft Cell will reunite for one last time at The O2, on Sunday 30 September 2018, in their first UK show for 15 years.

Marc Almond and Dave Ball will perform together for a one-off show, ‘Say Hello, Wave Goodbye’, as they celebrate their 40th anniversary as a duo with their first UK show since 2003. This will be the band’s ONLY and last EVER show.

One of the most influential groups to emerge from the electronic music scene in the UK in the 1980s, Soft Cell produced five albums of original material, book-ended by their debut; 1981’s ‘Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret’, and 2002’s ‘Cruelty Without Beauty’. The incredible string of hits Soft Cell produced during this time, including ten tracks that reached the UK Top 40 singles charts, need little introduction.

The unique combination of Ball’s musicianship and Almond’s tender yet assured delivery on songs such as ‘Memorabilia’, ‘Torch’, and of course their trademark ‘Say Hello, Wave Goodbye’ inhabits a unique place in British music history.

‘Tainted Love’, Soft Cell’s boundless Number One hit, is perhaps the most emblematic and evocative song of the era. A cover of Gloria Jones’ Northern Soul staple that kept the original’s yearning tone, Soft Cell enveloped the track with a slowed down instantly recognisable synth riff – a nod to pop music’s past, yet wholly updated with the fresh, modern sound of the 80s that still holds up to this day.

Intervening years have seen both Marc Almond and Dave Ball’s talent recognised with successful solo careers in their own right, with Almond awarded an Ivor Novello Inspiration Award in 2013, as well as an OBE this year’s New Year’s Honours List.  Ball went on to form The Grid, peaking with million-selling international hit ‘Swamp Thing’, as well as working as a producer and writer for the likes of Kylie Minogue and remixer for David Bowie, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, Yello & The B-52’s.

On performing their best-loved hits together again, Marc Almond commented “With Soft Cell I always felt something was unfinished. This last ever final show will be the best ever ending. It will be a real statement and send off, and thank you to every fan”

Dave Ball added "We live in very interesting times, and 2018 promises to be a very special year”.

Tickets go on general sale Friday 23 February at 9am.

«Chi sono gli dei di carta? Forse siete voi, giornali e giornalisti, fa piacere vedervi ancora con il taccuino e la penna in mano nell’era digitale, ma per quanto ancora scriverete così? O forse siamo noi, tutte le rock band e noi quattro in particolare, dei effimeri. Ma nel nostro caso con una piccola ambizione, quella di dare il meglio a 50 anni e passa, chi l’ha detto che un artista raggiunge il suo apice da giovane e poi vive di rendita?». Eccoli qui i cinquantenni che a vent’anni inventarono il “nuovo romanticismo”, via di mezzo tra il pop e David Bowie, e adesso provano a reinventarlo con un nuovo album, il 14°, Paper Gods: dei di carta, o se vogliamo di cartone, di cartapesta. Un album bello e potente, carico di echi del passato ma anche indirizzato su strade nuove, con l’aiuto di un nutrito gruppo di guest star che vanno dalla chitarra di John Frusciante alla voce di Lindsay Lohan.

A vederli spaparanzati su un divano del Soho Hotel, a far battutacce sul caffè ridendo di se stessi, i Duran Duran, ovvero Simon Le Bon (voce), Nick Rhodes (tastiere), John Taylor (basso) e Roger Taylor (batteria), non sembrano portare le cicatrici di bisticci e separazioni, tantomeno i segni dell’età: del resto sono quasi bebè rispetto alla generazione precedente, ai settantenni del rock come gli ex-Beatles, i Rolling Stones, i Pink Floyd, e difatti ambiscono “all’eternità”, non del tutto scherzosamente, come dice Roger Taylor: restare sulla scena ancora «molto, molto a lungo».

Ma cosa significa il titolo di questo album? «Viene dal verso di uno dei brani, l’autore sono io, ma riflette un pensiero comune», risponde Le Bon, «Allude al denaro, ai media, a noi stessi, agli dei di carta che credono di avere grande potere e invece non ce l’hanno, sono anch’essi effimeri in questa era digitale in cui tutto passa, ma è anche un titolo volutamente ambiguo, ognuno può leggerci quello che vuole».l coinvolgimento degli altri artisti? «John Frusciante ci ha chiamati quando ha saputo che lavoravamo all’album», dice Rhodes, «chi gli avrebbe detto di no, la sua chitarra è magica». «E Lindsay Lohan l’avevo conosciuta anni fa in uno studio discografico », continua Simon, «siamo diventati amici, la sua voce aggiunge qualcosa di unico, di sensuale, da vera diva». Osserva Roger Taylor: «Rispetto agli esordi siamo più consapevoli dei nostri mezzi, più maturi e determinati.

Sappiamo meglio quello che vogliamo. Del resto è impossibile saperlo a 19 anni e a 30 ti preoccupi al massimo dei sei mesi successivi, non di quello che farai a 50 anni. Ora invece ci pensiamo. Vogliamo durare ancora molto a lungo: per l’eternità, perché no». Certo, lo incalza Le Bon «di solito si pensa che un cantante dia il suo meglio da giovane, quando è vivace e pieno d’energia, ma anche la maturità artistica ha i suoi vantaggi e noi aspiriamo a raggiungere il vertice della nostra produzione, ad avere ancora un grande avvenire, anche da ultracinquantenni». Si sono lasciati e ripresi, adesso come va? «La verità è che, pur fra momentanee separazioni, la nostra unione è stata molto longeva», dice Nick. «Quando sei giovane è più facile stare insieme, ci sono solo i membri della band, poi ognuno ha amori e famiglie, le relazioni si fanno più complesse. Faccio un esempio, sono state lanciate tante accuse a Yoko Ono, ma non credo lei volesse far del male ai Beatles, voleva solo fare del bene a John Lennon. Noi quattro comunque stiamo bene insieme e insieme vogliamo produrre un nuovo rinascimento». Ottanta, la stagione della loro affermazione «sono stati anni di grande creatività artistica, non solo per noi, venivano fuori Madonna, Prince, gli U2, mentre David Bowie continuava a stupire », spiega John Taylor. «E poi qui a Londra, anzi proprio a Soho, c’era una quantità indescrivibile di talenti, nasceva la videomusica che avrebbe contribuito a cambiare anche la musica: è stato fantastico fare parte di quel momento ». I Duran Duran torneranno in Italia? «Senz’altro, avete un pubblico meraviglioso a cui siamo affezionati», assicura Le Bon. «Il ricordo più bello è di tanti anni fa. A Roma fummo invitati a Cinecittà per incontrare Fellini. Ma lui si scusò dicendo che doveva andare dal dottore. Il problema, disse, è che adesso la mia potenza sessuale è tutta qui, e indicò il cervello, mentre io vorrei farla scendere più in basso».

Bryan Ferry joined Todd Terje on stage for the first time in August 2014 to perform their collaboration 'Johnny & Mary'. Ferry had earlier played with his band on the same stage and joined Terje halfway the Norwegian's set. This is the first time they had performed the song together, and indeed the first time Ferry had sung it since the recording session in 2013.

LIVE AND KICKING - La prima volta dei Blondie in Italia!

(ANSA) - MILANO, 04 SET - Si sono fatti attendere 40 anni, ma ne e' valsa la pena: ieri al Circolo Magnolia e' andato in scena il primo concerto italiano dei Blondie, storica formazione punk newyorkese. L'ex coniglietta Debbie 'Blondie' Harry e' salita sul palco con un abito a righe verticali, quasi a ricordare le 'Parallel Lines' dell'omonimo album, il primo grande successo discografico che proietto' il gruppo dal punk alle classifiche pop e disco grazie ad 'Heart Of Glass': e' stata proprio questa canzone a chiudere il concerto, prima dei bis, ultimo regalo ai tremila spettatori del Magnolia.  Se il chitarrista Chris Stein non e' in forma e viene aiutato dal giovane ed esuberante Tommy Kessler, ci pensa l'altro membro fondatore, Clem Burke, alla batteria a dare un ritmo serrato al live: ad aprire le danze il punk dal gusto retro-sixties di 'One Way Or Another', uno dei primi singoli del gruppo, recentemente tornato nelle classifiche grazie a una cover degli One Direction. La scaletta alterna per un'ora e mezza vecchi successi a brani dell'ultimo album uscito a maggio, 'Ghosts of Download' (raramente all'altezza dei classici, tranne 'Euphoria' e 'A Rose By Any Name'). Ma sono proprio le hit i momenti piu' attesi: come 'Maria' che anche grazie a uno spot pubblicitario fu uno dei singoli piu' venduti in Italia del 1999; 'Call Me', scritta da Giorgio Moroder, che scatena il pubblico; 'The Tide Is High', alla quale Debbie si augura che il vicino Idroscalo non esondi come la suddetta marea; ma anche classici come 'Rapture' o 'War Child' ("questa canzone parlava della Palestina nel 1982 e da allora non e' cambiato niente", dice Debbie).  Se non sempre il concerto fila alla perfezione, e piu' di una volta Debbie deve chiedere il sostegno del foltissimo pubblico del Magnolia, a tenere insieme il tutto ci pensa un carisma e un fascino che non pare calato dal 1974: la regina del punk avra' un caschetto ormai piu' platino che biondo, ma e' ancora una stella del palco che sa incantare. Il concerto e' anche una festa: "stiamo celebrando i nostri 40 anni - dice dal palco la cantante - non riesco a pensare che siamo arrivati fin qui". E allora alle canzoni del gruppo si mescolano altre suggestioni, brani dei Beastie Boys ('Fight For Your Right') e dei Sex Pistols ('Anarchy in the UK'), omaggi a
un mito punk che ingenuamente vorrebbe reincarnarsi nelle magliette dello storico club 'CBGB' indossate da molti spettatori (oltre che, a buon diritto, dallo stesso Clem Burke sul palco), ma che va oltre gli anni '70 e si contamina, come la discografia dei Blondie ha saputo dimostrare toccando negli anni discomusic, reggae e pop e trovando cosi' un suo posto nella storia.

LIVE AND KICKING - Hurts più concreti ma meno espressionisti

Concerto ieri sera ai Magazzini Generali degli Hurts. Live meno estroso rispetto a quello dell'anno scorso all'Alcatraz, anche per via della location inadatta (la mancanza delle ballerine ha inoltre reso il tutto più canonico rispetto all'espressionismo affascinante del penultimo live). Theo sempre in forma, ma risente di una certa freddezza non percepita l'anno scorso, che si scioglie solo verso la fine (dalla seconda parte dello show, dalla versione accellerata di "Blood Tears and Gold" in poi). "Unspoken" vanta la miglior resa live. Voto: 7 (Voto anno scorso: 9)
